  87. The System BIOS file contains the Microid Research BIOS ("MR BIOS (r)"),
  88. customized for your Tyan S1468 (SMC Superio) board.  The 1995 MR BIOS (r)
  89. core provides the latest state-of-the-art BIOS technologies that automate
  90. your computer's setup and deliver unmatched performance and utility.
  91.  
  92. Unlike most programs that you are familiar with, the System BIOS does
  93. not execute from disk.  Instead, it is stored in a Flash-ROM component
  94. that resides on the motherboard and begins executing immediately upon
  95. powerup.  This Flash-ROM can be reprogrammed by means of a Flash Upload
  96. Utility.  In order to install MR BIOS (r) in your computer, you'll need
  97. to reprogram its Flash-ROM through use of the Flash Loader utility.
  98.  
  99. BE ADVISED THAT THERE IS AN ELEMENT OF DANGER IN REPROGRAMMING THE
  100. COMPUTER'S FLASH SYSTEM BIOS.  If the Flash Load procedure begins,
  101. but fails to completely load a valid BIOS image, your computer will be
  102. out of commission and you'll have to have it serviced.  The Flash-ROM
  103. will need to be physically replaced with another that contains valid
  104. code.  Reasons for the Flash Upload failure include 1) losing power
  105. while the upload is in progress, and 2) specifying and uploading the
  106. wrong file.  Needless to say, this would be a horribly disappointing
  107. experience.  Microid Research Inc. would most sincerely regret such
  108. a misfortune, however, understand that MICROID RESEARCH INC. DISCLAIMS
  109. ALL RESPONSIBILITY AND LIABILITY FOR THE USE AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE
  110. USE OF THIS PRODUCT.  So, please, take your time and be careful!

  112. The Flash Loader provides a simple menu of 3 options (4, including
  113. "exit").  There are two objectives of this utility.  First, it
  114. provides the facility to copy the existing BIOS into a disk-file
  115. for backup purposes.  This is option "1. Backup".  The companion
  116. function "2. Verify" allows you to confirm the backup file matches
  117. the existing BIOS.  The other purpose of the Flash Utility is to
  118. install a new BIOS, accomplished through option "3. Upload".
  119.  
  120. Be sure to backup the original BIOS before uploading MR BIOS into
  121. the Flash-ROM.  Otherwise, you won't be able to uninstall MR BIOS
  122. should you want to do so.  Even if you're sure you won't, it is a
  123. good practice to retain all original equipment that is supplied with
  124. your computer, "just in case".
  125.  
  126. The exact steps for uploading MR BIOS are enumerated in the Instructions
  127. section below.  Assuming you have followed those instructions and the
  128. upload has just completed, the Flash Loader will display a message
  129. directing you to reset the computer or re-cycle its power.  Upon doing
  130. so, you will be greeted with an alarming message that the "CMOS Memory
  131. is Corrupt", and the BIOS Setup Utility will be activated.  Don't be
  132. alarmed.  The Flash Loader Utility intentionally clears the CMOS to
  133. simulate a factory-new condition and provoke the Setup session.
  134.  
  135. Upon arriving in the Setup Utility, you will need to reset the time
  136. and date, and manually input the type(s) of Floppy drive(s) in your
  137. computer.  Beyond that, everything else will already be set for optimal
  138. performance and you can simply exit by pressing <F10>.  Or, you might
  139. browse around and tailor some options like Password Security or Power
  140. Management per your preference.  After this Setup session, your computer
  141. will reboot thereafter without any hysterical messages.

  146. MR BIOS (r) Installation Instructions

  149. Step 1
  150. ------
  151. Disable power management in the BIOS Setup Utility.
  152.

  155. Boot your computer "clean", to a non-Protected-Mode DOS environment.
  156. This is easily done by booting a floppy that contains only DOS, but
  157. neither CONFIG.SYS nor AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  158.  
  159. Step 3
  160. ------
  161. Invoke the 29C010 Flash Loader by typing "29C010" at the DOS prompt.
  162.  
  163. Step 4
  164. ------
  165. Select option "1. Backup" to make a copy of the original BIOS that
  166. came with the motherboard.  You will need to select a filename
  167. for the backup file - a good name would be "ORIGINAL.BIO".
  168.  
  169. Step 5

  171. Select option "2. Verify" to confirm the backup was successful.
  172. The status will be reported to you, either success or failure.
  173.  
  174. If it worked OK, proceed to Step 6.  Else figure out what is wrong
  175. and correct it.  Repeat Steps 4 and 5.

  179. Select option "3. Upload" to install MR BIOS into the Flash-ROM.
  180. You will need to enter the filename of the MR BIOS image that came
  181. with this distribution kit.  (It should be MR_TYAN3.BIO, unless
  182. somehow this documentation has gotten out-of-sync.  Tell us!)
  183.  
  184. Step 6a
  185. -------
  186. The upload process may take up to 15 eternal seconds, during which
  187. time you are likely to begin worrying.  Relax, and do NOT shut off
  188. the power or otherwise disturb the computer.
  189.  
  190. You'll be notified with a message on the CRT when the upload has
  191. completed.  Then, and not before then, press the reset button or
  192. recycle the computer's power.
  193.  
  194. Step 7

  196. The first bootup after loading the new BIOS, you will be directed into
  197. the BIOS Setup Utility.  Configure time, date, floppy drive(s) and other
  198. options.  Exit by pressing <F10>.

  200. Step 8

  202. Win95 Users:  In a few installations, Windows 95 has been reported to
  203. "remember" certain properties of the BIOS that has been replaced by
  204. MR BIOS.  This can lead to some bewildering behavior.  The best rule
  205. of thumb is to unconditionally run Win95's "Hardware Wizard" once after
  206. installing MR BIOS.  If weirdness persists, use the sledge-hammer
  207. approach and run Win95's "Setup".
